VISUAL SOCIOLOGIST RETRACES ‘THE AMERICANS’

Photographer Follows Robert Frank’s Famous Journey 50 Years Later

Cincinnati, OH (July 4, 2008) – Edgecliff Press announced today Americans Revisited, Volume 1. This book of epic photographic images was created by Visual Sociologist, J. Michael Skaggs in homage to the fiftieth anniversary of the release of Robert Franks’ pivotal work.

J. Michael Skaggs originally embarked in 1994 on a quest to photograph the 43 American cities visited by Robert Frank. This book covers 12 of the original 43 cities shot between 1994 and 2002. Mr. Skaggs traveled to New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Washington, D.C., among other cities in the Northeast and Midwest.

"In reading Robert Frank’s original book, I felt a kinship and it drove my desire to go out and explore America, not only as he saw it, but as it is today." Mr. Skaggs said, "Too much of our culture is hidden behind media, behind slick advertising images and what I am finding on my journey is that the true face of our country is actually not very different than what Mr. Frank saw a half century ago."

Edgecliff Press Publisher, Ari Buchwald was impressed with Mr. Skaggs’ efforts, and the quality of his work. "Robert Frank broke rules with his book – in his style of shooting, cropping and subject matter. I see Michael’s work as the same, quoting Franks’ spirit yet interpreting it to be uniquely Michael’s own vision."

Americans Revisited, Volume 1 will be available July 4th, 2008 from Edgecliff Press. In addition, J. Michael Skaggs’ photographs will be featured on the Edgecliff Press website and as a traveling show in various galleries throughout the US in 2008 and 2009.

Other books available from Edgecliff press include Right, Angels! and I Thought Pigs Could Fly as well as Alena and the Favorite Thing from Edgecliff Kids.
