Artist Statement: When I aim through the viewer and find my focus, I'm intent on a point of focus, on the thing or face or action that drew me to that single moment in time and space. When the shutter is clicked, all my attention and awareness is directed on that point. All else melts away. It is my moment of reflection and my moment of connection with the subject. It is that moment that I want to bring to the viewer, and if everything in the photograph were of equal intensity and focus, it wouldn't be what I saw at that moment. Southern Mexico is a world away, with a heritage that collects from widely varying cultures that intersect across centuries. Most of these images were taken in December of 2008, as the people in the small village of Teotitlán del Valle celebrated the season, not by purchasing gifts, but by parading through the streets playing music, with fireworks, and with a rish mixture of their Zapotec and Spanish heritages. |
